Gene, I would hold off on Armbian for now. The only way you can get PREEMPT_RT onto Armbian now is via the Armbian build environment. When I tried, it did not work out. You can't simply install PREEMPT_RT from the repos. One of the Armbian devs is working on a more automated approach but it's not ready yet. He was going to include parameters to also build linuxcnc as part of his project.
Also, Armbian also has binary images based on Debian Bookworm with XFCE so I would go that route if you do have a play.
