All three are synchronous electrical machines (except when they are
not, i.e. there are also asynchronous AC servos or reluctance motors
built as steppers). Steppers have a high pole-count and usually come is
2phase or 3phase variants whereas the non-stepper variants have a low
pole-count and usually have three phases.

Pole-count is the relation of electrical rotation to mechanical
rotation, i.e. with 2 poles you need 2 full AC cycles for one
mechanical rotation.
