If you do not have confidence in the product you are buying then select
another vendor. I understand your concern about products but I also
understand your perspective as a test laboratory owner. Please look at the
perspective of the consumer who has to pay for the extra assurance and the
producer who has to wait to sell his product until he gets permission for
other authorities before the product can start producing revenue.

How many tests are necessary to assure the product will be sufficient to
meet the expectations of the customer? This question has a different answer
if you are the consumer, the test house, the national authorities or the
manufacturer. All I am saying is we need to be practical and have a
 balance.

Dave,

The argument of buy from a different vendor just does not hold water. If it
were choice of milk, tea, coffee, etc., then yes I would agree. But we're
talking Hi-Fi, TV's, Cars etc. On may wages I can't afford to keep replacing
things that don't work well. Before coming to the US 14 years ago, I did not
have to replace any household appliances in 8 years. So far we have "worn out"
4 coffee makers, 3 Vacuum cleaners, 2 dishwashers ( the latest one is only 18
months old! ), a washing machine and dryer, 2 TV sets and so on.

I think that the market place shows us there is a problem when just about
every thing offered ( at least at the lower level ) comes with "extended
warranties". The catch is that they cost you money, and they are not cheap!
Add the cost up and it comes to a lot more for the consumer than doing good
design and testing at the manufacturer.

I treat products like this the same as those PC's carrying the Intel inside
warning sticker.

While I'm a test lab owner now my thoughts we're formed while working for
others, particularly when I saw what kind of "stuff" was going to be inflicted
on the consumer. By the way, I, and I suspect other labs do the same, don't
tell folks what tests to run, but I do help them evaluate their product: there
is a difference.

Have a great (trouble free) day,

Derek.
