These batteries are not sealed against the release of hydrogen gas that is generated during the charging process. I once tested for the concentration of gas in the battery area in a cash drawer enclosure of an electronic cash register and found a very high level - less than what is required for ignition, but still high enough that we added vent holes in order to prevent flying drawers - that would be a surprise for the clerk!
