He was given the title of 'Defender of the Faith' because he wrote a book attacking the Protestant, Luther. The Pope was stupid to antagonize Henry; the Papacy was already under severe attack for corruption and extortion throughout Europe. The C of E in Henry's reign was hardly different in ritual from the Roman Church.
