I never cease to be amazed by the things I don't know, but I am afraid that (so far as I am aware) the use of yellow only is not an acceptable alternative to green and yellow so far as protective or equipotential bonding conductors are concerned in any of the European equipment or building wiring standards.

If you can prove me wrong, Rich, I'd be delighted to have my knowledge expanded, but I do know for a fact that yellow only is commonly used as a phase conductor colour in three phase systems (the other two phases being blue and red) in building wiring systems in the UK. I am aware that other EU countries use different colours for phase conductors in some cases, but I would be surprised to discover that yellow only is an officially sanctioned alternative to green and yellow in any EU state.

Regards

Nick.

Hi Peter:

What is the percentage of color over a surface area for the insulated
green/yellow earthing conductor. Is it better to have more yellow than green
or more green than yellow. I know North Americans prefer more green than
yellow and Europeans like more yellow than green. Any historical reason? I
hope it has nothing to do with the Boston Tea Party! Can the group we come
   up with some compromise?

In North America, the earthing conductor in
building wiring is green.

In Europe, the earthing conductor in building
wiring is yellow.

For power cords and equipment earthing conductors,
a compromise was agreed to for green/yellow.

Note that in North America, power cord and
equipment earthing conductors may be green/yellow
or green.

In Europe, power cord and equipment earthing
conductors may be green/yellow or yellow.

Best regards,
Rich
