David and Gary - Gary has the name correct, but the difference in rating is derived due to complications related to the test method. VTM materials tend to curl up, wilt or shrink away from a flame when cut into test blanks normally used for the V-x small scale material testing. To overcome this, the test samples are formed into cylinders by wrapping them around a mandrel, to stiffen them. The samples are oriented the same as for the V-x testing and the mandrel is removed prior to applying a flame.
Since the test methods are different and not directly comparable, the VTM rating scheme was devised. In VTM-x, the -x part of the rating is roughly comparable to V-x ratings and are generally treated as equivalent. Regards, Peter L.
