My thanks to the many of you who responded with useful and interesting information.
It seems to me, based on the responses and on my wife's observations, that some European lighting manufacturers have not fully incorporated the details of US (and I believe, Canadian) electrical wiring installations into their designs. I have little doubt, having been in industry and seen widespread ignorance and disregard for details, that US manufacturers are equally guilty with regard to European installations.
