All, There will be a Northeast Product Safety Society meeting tomorrow Wednesday, June 23, at EMC Corporation's Customer Briefing Center in Hopkinton, MA. A social hour with light refreshments will begin at 7:00 PM and the technical meeting will start at 7:30 PM. Anne Doherty Johnson, Executive Director for AeA's New England Region, will be presenting this month’s technical topic concerning impending implementation of the EU WEEE and RoHs waste directives. If you will be in the area, please feel free to join us as NPSS membership or advanced notice is not required. The European Union Waste Directives, namely WEEE and RoHS, coming into effect in 2005 and 2006, will have a major impact on technology producers and require additional regulatory compliance measures and potentially product design changes. In addition to EU's environmental policy changes, various U.S. states have filed measures that include chemical bans or would require design changes. AeA is tracking some 39 e-waste bills pending in 11 US states. Anne will update the group AeA's efforts to help technology companies prepare for these product stewardship changes. AeA has completed a round of several educational seminars on the topic over the last 18 months and has worked with the law firm of Allen & Overy to allow companies to better understand what steps need to be taken to be prepared for these regulations, both internally and with suppliers and partners. She will also speak a bit about AeA's role in the technology industry. Anne Doherty Johnson serves as Executive Director, New England Council, for the American Electronics Association (AeA), the nation’s oldest and largest high tech trade association. In that role, she manages AeA’s local office with a focus on educating members about key public policy issues that impact their business, and fostering relationships among AeA’s 3,000 plus member companies nationwide. AeA members span the high tech spectrum, from software to computers, telecom to medical devices, semiconductors to aerospace and defense. The association, now celebrating its 60th anniversary, is headquartered in Washington DC and is recognized as the voice of the high tech industry. Ms. Doherty Johnson has extensive experience in association management, marketing and public relations. As Senior Communications Specialist for CGU Insurance, she handled producer communications and provided marketing counsel to the company’s internal departments. As Director of Public Affairs for the American Insurance Association, she directed media relations and grassroots activities in support of the group’s public policy agenda, and created an industry-backed community college training program. As Director of Communications for the Professional Independent Insurance Agents of New England, she was recognized with national excellence awards for managing the association’s communications, membership sales and advertising programs, consistently growing membership and revenues. A technical presentation should be 45 to 60 minutes in duration and be related to product safety. Although the presentation may reference your company and it’s services, the presentation must not be simply company advertising. We would also appreciate any slides or handout materials be made available for posting on the NPSS web site. Releasing presentation materials for posting is desired but not a requirement to make a presentation.
