Brian,

1) If you are going to get your product Listed by UL or other NRTL, forget
using the MIL wire unless it also has UL R/C status. For compliance to the
end product safety standard, the component wire must meet the wire standard
(and usually with suitable wire flame rating = VW-1). You can have the wire
"evaluated for your application" but this is sure to be a long and expensive
process with no guarantee of compliance.

2) Instead of using the 600 V mains wire (for reinforced insulation), have
you considered only using 300 V wire = for areas where mains and SELV wire
are in contact, evaluate the combination of the mains wire and the secondary
wire for double insulation = one of the two wires can be evaluated as basic
and the other as supplementary. Or perhaps the same 300 V wire for both
mains and secondary and evaluate the combination for reinforced insulation
requirements (since you will have 2 layers of the same material).

Subject: MIL -v- UL Wire

We want our products to be compliant with UL3101-1 and EN61010-1.

We need to use 600 volt hookup wire because in some applications we can't
avoid routing primary wire along side of secondary wiring.

UL listed 600 volt wire has an insulation thickness of .034" which is too
thick for some of our connectors. In those cases, we would like to use MIL
Standards wire (MIL-W-16878 Type B) which has a .010" PVC insulator with a
.003" Clear Nylon Jacket, also rated for 600 volt.

Can I use the MIL Standard wire in place of the UL wire? Will I get
objections from UL when the system is evaluated?

Thanks,
Brian Kunde
