Hello All:

I need some help clarifying the typical way that E1 lines are terminated at
the customer premises in Europe.

It is my impression that when the network operator installs an E1 line, the
network operator typically includes an NTP (Network Terminating point) that
electrically terminates the E1 line.  This device provides a loopback
capability as well as a certain degree of isolation.

>From a review of the E1 standards TBR 12 and TBR 13, it appears that these
standards presume the customer TE will be connected to an NTP of the type I
described above.  TBR 12 and TBR 13 contain no provisions for line build-out
to accommodate varying cable lengths, and they define the interface to the NTP
as SELV.

To summarize my question, for E1 interfaces on customer-owned TE in Europe, is
the interface to the  outside lines typically made through some sort of NTP
device that provides some degree of isolation from the outside lines?  Also,
is the situation the same for primary rate ISDN?

I'm not particularly concerned about whether the customer TE interface is SELV
or TNV-1, since my planned interface will meet TNV-1 requirements anyway.  My
main concern is what degree of lightning protection (if any) will be required
in order to provide high reliability in customer installations.
