To All, One member tried some searching and had problems. I should have included the following recommendations in my first post:
After you click on the Search button, a split window opens. On the left you enter and / or select search parameters. 1. Enter search terms in the top box. The Select Any or Select All buttons do just that - all means a message contains all the terms, but not necessarily in any order, sequence, or position. 2. De-Select both date range boxes. This is MOST IMPORTANT. Messages may be in or out of the date range you think they are in. 3. Below the date range boxes should be a scroll box that contains all of the files you can search on the community. For EMC-PSTC items, you want archives with file names in the format of: EMC-PSTC Mailing List - 1997. Just substitute whatever year you think you want to search, scroll until you find it. Just click once on the file and it is highlighted and selected. You can control click to select multiple years. 4. Don't change any other settings. Don't know what they do so leave them alone (unless you feel froggy). 5. Note that when the search is done, a list of messages (supposedly containing your search terms) shows up in the right hand window. I use Netscape and found that right click and open link in NEW WINDOW works best. Wait and it will display the actual message. 6. Searches should not take more than a minute or two. Remember that the broader the search, the longer it takes. Short simple searches on one archive file at a time works best. 7. NOTE that every message seems to be posted by archive. This is an artifact of how the messages are massaged and imported into the archive file. Unfortunate, but that's the way it is. So don't bother searching for Posted By:. 8. If your search seems to run on and on and on and on, just close the search window and start over. Do not be hasty, but a limited search should not take more than a few minutes. If it does, narrow your search criteria and try again. Use the above tips with a grain of salt. But from my experience, you should be able to find what you are looking for (if it is there) in about 10 or 15 minutes tops. If you are positive it is there and still have trouble, send me an email off-list.
