The automotive industry uses ISO standards for its mechanical bits, so 
when they started on auto electrics standards, they naturally went to 
ISO. After quite a few years, IEC accepted the situation, but not 
without a good few tears and tantrums. ISO is taking on other 
electrotechnical subjects, and one day I suspect there will be a 
take-over bid.
