Not clear how to protect, but ESDA WG 14 is working on 2 documents: one to describe a metrology for measuring discharges from cables (long and short - USB included) and one on how to test for the effects of a cable discharge... If you're interested, I can get you more info on this subject... (I'm chairman of the working group...)
