Auto req ID 7469BR Position Title Sr. Project Manager, Ecodesign Job Description Position Objective Lead the company’s initiatives for incorporating ecodesign criteria, including principles for design-for-environment (DfE), design for end-of-life, part standardization, energy efficiency, take back schemes into the company’s instrument products. Ensure company’s electrical and electronic equipment products meet conformance with applicable product safety, Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), and environmental regulations (e.g., RoHS, WEEE) and product safety standards (e.g., UL, TUV) relevant in our key sales regions. Essential Functions Re-invent this product safety department from driving not just compliance programs but going beyond compliance. Develop and implement policies, objectives, plans, procedures for the global compliance engineering programs. This includes the creation and maintenance of programs for ensuring our company’s instrument products meet product safety standards, EMC requirements, and environmental-driven requirements to be able to sell products globally. Lead company initiatives in incorporating Design-for-Environment/closed loop principles into product design including elements of part standardization, design-for disassembly, energy efficiency, recycled content. Engage with customers to identify the environmental, health and safety features they would like to have incorporated into our instruments and lead the efforts for their inclusion; help our customers “green” their laboratories. Pioneer environmental initiatives with financial gains for our instrument business, e.g., parts standardization/reduction, extending revenue through life refurbishment, resale. Transform the instrument design and development process to incorporate design for end-of life considerations (e.g., ease of disassembly for refurbishment, reclamation, recovery). Establish take-back hubs for refurbishment, resale, reuse of instruments as well as to harvest for high value parts for re-use. Lead efforts to identify outside partnerships that support and/or validate our green claims (e.g., UL Environment, Energy Star). Engage leaders and operations staff in R&D, Procurement, Manufacturing, Service, Marketing, Regulatory Affairs, and others on instrument safety and ecodesign initiatives. Participate in hiring, promoting, and managing subordinate employees; train subordinates; assign, direct and review their work. Lead efforts in finding productivity gains in implementation of instrument safety processes, environmental initiaves, and training. Stay current with and analyzes domestic and internationally-relevant product safety and environmental regulations, legislations, and initiatives, which may impact our business as it pertains to our instrument products. Analyze the regulatory implications and develops and implements programs and systems, assess the risks, including financial and legal impact(s) on our business, to drive company strategies. This may include providing input in decisions for conducting further testing Consult and negotiate on behalf of the company, with external regulatory and certification agencies. Support business groups in follow-up with site audits (internally or externally), as they apply to instrumentation product safety requirements. Participate in investigations and follow-up of field incidents as they apply to product instruments. Ensure product literature incorporates adequate hazard information to meet regulatory and product liability requirements. Prepare and execute on: regulatory/hazard opinions, informative reports, training. Hands-on product safety testing may be required. May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned. Education: A minimal 4-year degree or equivalent professional experience in engineering or instrument design. Experience/Requirements: 8 or more years of professional experience in product safety & electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) for Laboratory Equipment, Medical Devices, or equivalent (including evaluation, testing, trouble-shooting, and regulatory agency interaction. 2 or more years of experience in leading or participating in environmental initiatives, e.g., Design-for-Environment, global take back programs, RoHS, WEEE) for electrical or electronic equipment. Knowledgeable of worldwide regulations and laws covering product safety and environmental regulations as they apply to electrical and electronic equipment. Knowledge of medical device requirements a plus. Requires the ability to manage large-scale projects. Strong interpersonal and communications skills, organizational and planning abilities needed to handle multiple tasks concurrently. Excellent computer (spreadsheet, database) skills, with the flexibility to learn web technology, Agile, and SAP. Anticipates needs and problems while creating solutions. Is strategic, astute and forward-thinking. Is curious, inquisitive, innovative, never satisfied with the status quo. Greets challenge and change as opportunity.
