Many thanks to all that replied. What this shows is that even when the standard addresses a requirement, labs still test different ways.
I have mixed feelings on the "spirit" of the law since this depends heavily on ones experiences. I also have misgivings about deviating from the real world ( actual cable length ) since that begins to look like the mess emissions testing is. I'd be strongly in favor of moving the conducted/radiated testing transition to around the 100 MHz region and setting test distance at a standard 3 meters also. That would be for both emissions and immunity. Any organization working on something like this? The “spirit” is better than the “letter” to my mind! I have also head it said that “the law is an ass”, but still some of us humans thrive on taking the letter of the law to the extreme. Changing the subject completely: My wife told me this morning that a colleague of hers was called in to see the boss yesterday to justify why she has been “clocking in and starting work around 5 minutes early on a regular basis”. When she asked why this is a concern, she was told that her “working hours are as stated in the employment contract and that any deviation from them can invoke disciplinary procedures”. When she asked her boss if she could be dismissed for continuing to start work early, he said “Yes”! Her response to that was, “WOW! That would look great on my CV!” Test labs have to be careful of their comments regarding compliance to a standard. You never know what idiot will be reading your report!
