Hi Richard,

There is no formal registration process required for labs. The only formal
arrangements necessary for a US entity is if they issue Notified Body
opinions. In that case, they must be recognized by NIST under the US-EU MRA
as a Conformity Assessment Body.

The testing, however, is not so tightly controlled (or monitored), per se,
by the EU directly.

As to individual country "registrations", the only instance that applies is
if a device has not been testing to harmonized standards or operates outside
the harmonized frequency allocations. In that case, a notification is sent
to each country where the device is to be operated. Further (or prior), a
device that is evaluated to other-than-harmonized standards/frequencies must
have a Notified Body opinion and carry special markings (an ALERT symbol and
the NB number assigned to the issuer of the opinion).

For the most part, 802.11b/g standards and frequencies are well-harmonized
(there is a tiny bit of spectrum in France in the 2.4GHz range that is still
not harmonized, I believe).

Subject: [PSES] EU wireless registration

All,

I have a test lab that is telling me that for an 802.11 b/g device that they
do not need to be registered in the EU member states. The ETSI reports have
been done and the lab has issued a declaration of conformity. Last I was
aware was there had to be registration is each member state and many of the
could be done on line. Can any one confirm or deny this.

Thanks you for your opinions.
