I’m curious, why would retailers care if a product has an NRTL? Does the retail stores share liability responsibility for the products they sell? As long as they are not knowingly selling an unsafe product they should be free >from litigation. Otherwise, Toyota dealers better look out. :-)
The thumb drive I just bought from Best Buy doesn’t have an NRTL. Does have FCC and CE marking, though. I hope I’m not coming off like I’m beating you up. I really am curious about this topic. OSHA probably wouldn’t it see it. But large retailers may not sell the product without an NRTL. I hate to be the first one to reply to such an email for I’m sure I’m forgetting something important and I’ll just embarrass myself, but here it goes. Does your product have a laser in it or anything that could harm someone if not properly used? I’m assuming not but if so, get NRTL. Otherwise, your decision to get NRTL on such a device will mostly have to do with liability. If you plan on selling a lot of these and if, by chance, they start burning down buildings or hurting people, you will want an NRTL in your corner to help reduce your liability. If your device is very unlikely to cause harm and you feel you can handle any liability, then NRTL is not required. I’m not aware of any law in the US that would require NRTL listing or certification on such a device. I’m not really in the consumer electronics business so I might be wrong. I don’t think OSHA would ever see one of these. Something I should have mentioned in the earlier email. This device can be used in a home office and will be sold in retail stores - it is assumed having to meet UL60950-1. Hello all, We are having a discussion on what constitutes attaining NRTL recognition/listing. We have a small USB device, a colorimeter used for emissive color measurements of LCD, CRT and laptop displays for use in profiling needs; from monitor to scanner to printer. In order to calibrate (or profile) a color system so what you see on your monitor is what gets printed. Photographers and graphic designers use this product. The discussion is do we really need to attain NRTL recognition/listing. Over the years I have looked into this and determined we had to but I just can’t find the information on the OSHA website anymore. Can anyone point me in the right direction or minimally give me your opinion/arguments.
