For a clear, general approach, I'd like to see the generics used for all
electronic products where it makes sense to do so.   For instance, why would a
DC power supply need a family-specific EMC  standard? 

I'd also like to see a generic standard for product safety for most electrical
and electronic equipment, preferably one based on a IEC standard which could
be adopted by CSA and UL..   In my opinion, there has been an unreasonable
proliferation of product safety and EMC standards over the years.

There is IEC TS 61000-6-5. I suppose that for emissions, IEC/EN 
61000-6-4 applies if no product (family) standard exists.
