The assessors must live in the real world: I know that's difficult for 
the aliens who become assessors. (;-)

CEN and CENELEC support dated references over undated; there are 
arguments on both sides but the clincher is that with a dated reference 
you know exactly what to do. With an undated reference, there is usually 
doubt: do I include Amendment 1 or not, since Amendment 2 rescinds 
Amendment 1 but is still in its transition period!

So the assessors have to accept that older editions of standards have 
validity under some circumstances.

Actually, today a colleague told me of an opposite case; he was taken to 
task by an assessor for not having the 1975 edition of a standard. It is 
called up (obviously in error) in a current safety standard, instead of 
the 2006 edition!
