Thanks for the info, I agree technically I'm sure anything like this can be done with SAP. Getting IT to spend time or money on it is another matter. We already have a rock solid ECO and documentation control process for all parts critical or not. It's managing the critical parts "list" for each TF that needs some automation support. Right now we are doing it manually outside of SAP with a spread sheet and macros. I guess I should have asked in my original question, is there functionality in SAP for creating TF critical parts lists out of the box?

My employer uses SAP with a custom (browser-based) front-end to form a paperless ECO/ECN system. And yes, SAP is obscenely powerful - will do anything a decent programmer asks of it. A system is only as good as the data fed to it. My employer has implemented component standard sheets for all stuff - not just 'critical'. Designers, buyers, and receiving inspection must reference these docs. And there are only two people in the company that can approve a change to a comp std sht. You will probably have to come up with an internal control number for each part, but this allows you to specify various mfrs' part nos for a particular BoM item, and still allow control of everything (except the toilet paper in the restroom). Your best bet here is to talk with your IT group and let them know what you need. There is a good chance they can do it for you, or contract someone who can. We're using SAP to manage BOMs, approved suppliers and approved parts so there is no issue in controlling the parts themselves for production. But currently we record only OEM and OEM part number in SAP for each part. Ideally I'd be able to flag parts as critical in SAP and store some basic details in SAP needed in the TF critical parts list like agency approvals or file numbers, maybe critical ratings so I can run a report on a product BOM and have it pull all the critical parts out and build the current critical parts list automatically. I haven't asked our IT folks if they have any idea on this yet. -Dave David P.
