Mr. Woodgate can really trip my triggers. The mode and ranges are already covered in IEEE754. There was no reason that this should not have been part of 754, as it is now in the community as IEC60559. The committee attempted to call 1788 a 'basic' standard, but the IEEE shoved it back, so they relegated an important basis for ALU design and Computer Science to an isolated, stand-alone standard. And it does NOT cover de-normalized float intervals. Meh.
