Hi Gert and the group,

I am careful not to handle these resistors to keep from having my skin
chemicals contaminate the surface of the resistors and possibly change their
value. They are a lot of fun to play around with in the lab.

Many times it is dangerous to send your equipment out for calibration. I have
lost count of the number of times it came back damaged in one way or another.
So for my friends with resistance meters used in static compliance measurements
of things like workstations, I tell them to buy a bunch of these resistors to
calibrate their instruments and just send the resistors to the cal labs to be
checked!

Doug

You can get 100MOhm to 10 GOhm UxCell brand resistors from Amazon. I use a lot
of these both for safety reasons as above and to make high impedance circuits
like oscillators. If you want to get some, here is a link uxcell 1G Ohm 3W 5%

Off topic, but useful anyway.
In the 80-ties i have been involved in operational amplifiers for gas
chromatographes, or actually parametric amplifiers
as they were called at the time. We used resistors in this range. Note you
cannot mount them on a Printed Circuit board, but need
to apply teflon stand-ups, hat need to be washed ultrasonically before
testing. I still have some (glass) samples about 5cm long.

Coaxial power cables are indeed used for this purpose. But I developed a method

reason I did this work is that hearing loops use audio-frequency magnetic
fields in the microtesla range, so I know how to measure them. If anyone is
interested in the idea, please send me an email. It doesn't work for DC, of
course, without some trickery.

To address dielectric effects, I have seen both cables and capacitors
“recharge” themselves to some extent after being discharged. I have a large (I
can barely lift it) 50,000 Volt capacitor that I keep a 1 GOhm resistor across
it that would discharge it over a few minutes after my experiments if I forget
to reinstall the short after using it. The time constant is long enough not to
affect my experiments which usually only need it to be charged for a few
seconds.

storage (memory) in the dielectric (Indeed) that gets re-triggerd once the
cable is at rest. If not connected, the QRM cannot leave the cable

amplitude DC will iron out the storage, and make the cable suitable for its

May be our friend Doug has some enlightening ideas on this ? (sorry Doug, not

Hi, Gert. Can you please explain a bit more? Do you mean stored charge in the
