It's the file format I use to get to g-code.
But I'm in the world of 3D scanning and prototyping.
I actually prefer the .ply file format for polygons.
About 40% smaller than the equivalent .stl so it loads and displays
faster. Really nice when you're repeatedly opening a 2M poly scan to chop
up for milling. Though I still have to save the chopped off sections as
.stl for importing into the toolpath generating software.
Hopefully others will start to recognize the advantages of .ply and more
software will be enhanced so it can read it.
