I did get linmodem to work once with a box I had.  In fact it was rather
easy but I had to download the package on another box, move the source
to the box with the winmodem chip, and compile.  That done, a modprobe
slmodem got the system installed so that the other software could find
it.  That was in the days before Ubuntu.  I've not tried since although
there are several of those modems laying about.

These days I find it a lot easier to use an external modem that is
serial port connected.  What I've got here looks like an ActionTec.
