My advice is: buy an used IBM on ebay...a T42 will do its work very well. You will find them in a range from 300$ to 500$ depending on configuration and conditions and warranty status. In my opinion, and for my experience (right now I'm using a IBM T42, and I've always used IBM laptops...) these are the best laptops available on the market.
