Hi - I have a VIA systems board (600Mhz) running a Mesa 5i20 doing 40 to 60ipm rapids without any problems. Ubuntu is pretty bloated as default, I removed all the Gnome fluff and run plain old X with the Openbox windows manager, it works great. And if it blows up, thats only a $99.00 board that I will loose, pretty cheap to replace considering the total cost of running a CNC system.
