Yes, it is possible. You need a spindle with encoder and index pulse output. The sample configuration "nist-lathe" shows the necessary HAL configuration when the encoder is connected to parport pins 11, 12, and 13.
The sample ngc file "threading.ngc" uses a bunch of G33 (spindle synchronized motion) commands to cut a thread; the file "g76.ngc" uses the threading canned cycle to make a 20TPI thread.
