Our group (details at http://www.linuxcnc.org) develops a free software machine tool control program. One of our best developers extended xfig to convert electronic drawings to the type of data used as input to computer controlled machine tools. We try to be diligent about licensing issues, and the question of GPL compatibility was raised while considering whether to redistribute his useful work.
