It depends greatly on what you want to do.  If you want to
use the software-generated step pulses, then CPU speed directly
affects the top step rate you can get.  If you will be using one
of the step generator boards or a servo system, then a much
slower CPU will do fine.  I have found on Dell optiplex systems
that I need 256 MB to install from CD, but can drop down to 128
MB to run EMC.  I am using a number of ~600 MHz systems to run
EMC2 on servo systems with excellent results.
