Hi Aram

The Ubuntu/Gnome modem handling sucks. It requires sudo each time and
it does NOT know when the modem gets disconnected. Talk about a Human
Machine Interface that doesn't have a clue. Fortunately Ubuntu installs
wvdial so there is a real modem handler laying around. I abandoned the
internal modems a long time ago in favor of a serial connected
cheapie.

You see, many of the internal modems are not really complete modems,
they are more like a telephone to PC hardware interface. These kinds of
devices require software in the PC to do the real modem work -- thus the
notion that they need a driver. Check out www.linmodems.org and also
search for linmodem. There is software available that will probe for
the specific chip. I got one of these to work for a while but had to
compile for it. Then lightning ate it!
