Axis substitution is no more than mass substitution of the axis
label to allow the control to use the program. The rotary axis values
should be the same regardless of the machine configuration. It may be
necessary to reverse the sign (mirror) a rotary axis to get the motion
correct but that would be a minor thing as it would be the same every
time you did the substitution.

On my machine with a Fanuc 10M control and another with a Yasnac
MX1 control the tool pockets are related to parameters in the control.
The value of the parameter is the tool in the pocket. There is also a
parameter for the tool in the spindle and a parameter for the empty
pocket. They are both random tool changers. The tool pockets are NOT
the tool numbers the program requests. The program requests the tool
number and the control maps the requested number to the pocket number
with the parameter value. This is a little confusing when first
encountered but very quickly it is learned to never put tools directly
in the pockets, you want to call the tool number into the spindle and
put the tool in the spindle. This then maintains the mapping.
You can watch the parameters and see them change as the tool
change completes.
A parameter file on the hard drive could be opened for read/write
while the control is on. Other parameters could be available in that
file.
