Resolvers have a number of advantages over optical encoders:


Reads Absolute position (Possibly eliminating the need for Hall effect 
sensors)

Much more rugged mechanically

Wider temperature range (limited only by wire insulation)

Longer lifespan (no LEDs to dim-out), sensor is completely passive

With the advent of single chip resolver to digital converters, most of the 
analog problems go away.

Remember that the optical encoder is analog inside...
