Dave, I owe you an apology. I told you that the fix for this problem would be in emc 2.2, but then I never committed it. Now I have, so the fix for this problem should (finally!) be in emc 2.2.6 when it is released. Or you can pick up the latest TRUNK or v2_2_branch if you want to compile it yourself.
