Well, there is a lot of history there. Paul Corner is the
developer of the BDI, which was the first way for non Linux
gurus to install EMC and get it running in less than 3 weeks
(WITH help from the real gurus!) He integrated an RT-patched
Linux install with EMC all on one CD. His contribution was an
IMMENSE boost to EMC back around, maybe 2003. I have to say
that his BDI enabled me to update and follow developments, which
I had NOT been doing from 1998 through 2003, because it was TOO
HARD! And, yes, I was the SECOND EMC user outside NIST.

Sometime around 2005-2006 Paul had a big disagreement with the
rest of the developers over the direction of EMC development and
has partially broken camp. He doesn't like HAL, for some reason
which I've never understood, and his continuation of his own EMC
version does not include HAL. I think HAL has been an immense
positive development, and even though there is a clear cost (I
can measure it on an oscilloscope, the servo update cycle does
take longer) the flexibility gained has been well worth it in my
opinion. I also hoped that HAL would enable threading to be
done. I'm not sure that it is entirely BECAUSE of HAL that the
threading problem was solved, but I think it opened up
possibilites for easier development of that.

There's more, but I'm not sure I want to air any more dirty
laundry in public.

Jon
