Chris, Thanks for the info - thats a lot of knowledge - I will review it to understand the substitution better :)
I found MY problem - I misspoke (lied - government testimonial influence) when I said I was in all the correct directories. I reviewed each my steps to see if I had done 'cp' or 'mv' and found I had cd'd to the wrong directory to do the compile.
