If there's any error in the "try" block near that set_buttons_sensitive call (like zero division if you have accel, pitch, one of the gears ... set to 0, or if any of the value text entry areas has an invalid number, for example), then the forward button will be disabled.
Could you and Peter try making a new config and see if it works correctly for you then?
