Hubert,
   I depends on the accuracy you are looking for. For machined metal
parts you will need to have a Z marker pulse on your encoder. The
limit switch only serves to position the slide so the home search will
find the marker pulse on the same revolution of the ball screw so the
home position is repeatable to a high degree of precision.
