Hello Ian,

What about trying one of those radio control outrunner brushless dc motors and
electronic speed controllers (ESC)? They are common on eBay and the
RCgroups.com
classifieds here in the states. That would keep you in your power supply range,
but allow you to run up to 1500 watts and 20,000 rpm or more, provided your
spindle bearings can handle it. The control signal is a 0 - 5v pwm with a
period
of 60 Hz and a pulse width of 1.0 to 2.0 mS which corresponds to 0-100% power.
I
think that the ESCs for r/c cars will reverse the motor using the smaller
portion of the pwm range. I would think it would be possible to output that on
a
Pport pin using pwmgen. A second pin could be your on/off signal.

A guy, Matt Shumaker has an interesting web site documenting his electric bike
project here:
http://www.recumbents.com/WISIL/shumaker/default.htm

He has a cnc Sherline style micro mill with a brushless outrunner motor on the
spindle:

I highly recommend reading his informative posts and maybe even shoot him an
email about how he is controlling the spindle.

Tom
