There is a possibility that the direction setup signal is latched by the direction hold I suppose and that tells it which direction. But I don't have any of this particular beast so I'm not sure. I'd re-read the docs & maybe even setup a test circuit that just drove small bi-colored led's to see how it actually works. There were some state graphs in the pdf that might help clarify that, a case of a picture being worth many words. ;) I'd print it, that way you have it exactly as they published it.
