Turns out the VFD was NOT overheating.  I finally got suspicious as it 
was staying so cool with the fan on it and read several sections of the 
manual.  The page describing the error codes wasn't very clear at all.  
"electronic overtemp" sounded to me like the drive was overheating, but 
what they really meant was the digital motor protection function had 
decided the motor averaged above nominal current for too long.  So, I 
turned that feature off and did 160 holes last night.  The motor never 
got above warm.  It is designed for plug reversing off 440 V mains.

I do have a braking resistor on it, and it gets a little warm, but 
that's all.  Without the resistor, it would get overvoltage alarms.
