Use the Synaptic package manager to get and install "Idle" which is a editor/debugger for Python. It is small, yet powerful for finding errors and testing code. It saves much head banging.
There is also Eclipse, which is a full blown IDE. It has a Python add in that you can load off the Eclipse website. But to me, using Eclipse is like using a 10 lb sledge hammer to drive a tack - overkill. The Axis graphics are done in Tcl/TK which is a different language. There is a lot to learn.
