Yes, for XYZ, there are parallel rotary axes ABC.

If it is only a spindle, then it is not an axis.

Right, so at least with EMC2, the spindle is not a named axis, as the 
only command
it will follow is speed (S) and direction (M02, M04).  It only needs a 
name (it would normally
be C) if it can be positioned with a command in the G-code.
