A GX180, just to throw out a model number, probably had a dozen different motherboards over the lifetime of the model. But, they are mostly the same mobo chipset, and pretty much all Intel chipsets. I used a number of GX110 and similar models in the past, but now I'd recommend a GX260 as a more modern model. It will be able to take more memory than the older ones, and probably have a faster CPU. I am still running my Bridgeport on a GX110 with 128 MB of memory (You can't install Linux with that little memory, but it will run OK after the install.) A 1.5 - 2.4 GHz Pentium CPU and 512 MB of memory will run even the latest Ubuntu fine. > Since I don't remember who was endorsing these machines I would ask > That was me. > if you could tell me the model or even the Dell Service number for > the machines you are using so that I could establish a general > pattern for which machine I should seek out in order to have a decent > shot at good latency. > > My experience with several different Dimension models is that they > can be made to work but don't have great latency even with video > cards and the on board video disabled. So, you probably want 2.4 GHz or more.
