Stuart Apologies if this is stating the obvious, but the existing board almost certainly uses the amplitude of the Sin/Cos to interpolate the basic counts and so get a useful accuracy out of the scale. Heidenhain often have a ruling of 20 micrometres so with quadrature, discarding the analogue information, you only get 5 micron resolution.
