The stuff we used on the lab benches in Micro something like 50 years ago was a mixture of cresol's. Think creosote smell ( classic railroad ties and pilings ) and toxicity. It soaked into the stone lab tops and permeated our lab jackets but nothing grew in its presence.
In the military we had unlimited quantities of 190 proof to swab benches. Most of the antibacterials today are quats ... quaternary ammonium compounds.
