Yes, but I don't know how repeatable a Hall sensor is. My lathe uses a
Hall sensor for the home switches, but it only needs to get within .1",
then the encoder index takes over. A small magnet with a blade shape
like a thin gear tooth might work well. You'll have to give it a try.
You need to be able to home with a dial indicator attached and get the
same reading several times.

I suppose you could AND home and flag with hardware or with a HAL
component to get axis.N.home-sw-in. encoder.N.phase-Z is also used with
homing but isn't used unless you have the encoder component loaded. I
haven't given this much thought. I'm not sure there would be any
advantage to this unless you had encoders.
