In that case, I would be tempted to hide the complexity from the operator (even if it is you) and make it all automatic. I think I would be tempted to always have a target VFD frequency of 60Hz (which is where the motor will be happiest), and to set the varispeed on that basis. You could then add a closed-loop spindle control on VFD frequency only.
