Both seem to be used, with bought-from-Mesa possibly the more common.

I have a bit of breadboard with headers and a few ULN2003 chips to
buffer the high-current stuff like relays. It acts a bit like a
plugboard to allow for easy reconfiguration. (pin headers, then bits
of wire with crimped-on sockets from multi-conectors, without the
shells)

If I was doing it again I would use Molex header plugs with the
shells, as they are easy enough to move about in the shells, and make
for quicker unplugging and fewer errors.
