I know that you can run my boards with a completely software-driven handshaking in the PS/2 bidirectional mode, but there is quite a lot of CPU overhead. With a PCI parallel port board, you can pump in or out bytes in 600 ns or less. With the software handshaking, it is more like 2 us per byte, although that measurement is from old motherboards, so it might go faster today.
